Bandar Penawar Sports School On A Hot Streak

Bandar Penawar Sports School remained unbeaten after five matches in the Ministry of Education Football League (MEFL) Under-14 competition with a convincing 2-0 win over Selangor in a Group B match on Saturday.

In the match played at Padang C in UiTM in Shah Alam, Bandar Penawar showed all-round strength to score both the goals in the first half.

Right flanker Rafik Ishak gave his team the lead with a well executed goal before midfielder N. Thanabalan added the second.

With a two-goal cushion, Bandar Penawar took their foot off the pedal after the breather but had reason for doing that as they have another match on Monday when they take on Sarawak at Padang MSN in Bukit Jalil.

Despite playing two matches in three days, Bandar Penawar coach Zainuddin Mohd Zain, is still confident that his team will be able to maintain their unbeaten run in the first round.

After the match against Sarawak, Bandar Penawar will complete their fixtures with a home match against Johor this Saturday.

“It is tiring but I have faith in the young team. The players have shown a lot of commitment and good teamwork. This has been our hallmark in the matches played so far,” said Zainuddin.

“Except for four players who are in Form Two, the rest of the team is made up of players who are below 13 years of age and studying in Form One.”

Bandar Penawar lead the group with 13 points derived from four wins and a draw.

They beat Malacca 3-1 in their opening match but were held to a 1-1 draw by Terengganu.

However, Bandar Penawar woke up from the jolt with a thumping 3-0 win over Pahang before the match against Selangor.

“Ours is a very young team with a majority of the players still under 13-years-old and still studying in Form One...only four are from Form Two,” said Zainuddin.

Goalkeeper Mohamad Ghafur, striker Mohammad Amin, Thanabalan and Rafik form the backbone of the team.

“They form the core of the team. The team has gone from strength to strength and from what I have seen, we can only get better,” said Zainuddin.

Meanwhile, Terengganu registered a double when both their Under-17 and Under-14 teams came off on top against Malacca - winning 4-0 and 2-0 respectively.

In other Under-14 Group B matches, Pahang beat Johor 3-1 while Negri Sembilan edged Sarawak 3-2.

In Group A,  Perak thumped Perlis 6-0 and Kedah walked away with a 4-3 win over Penang in a seven-goal thriller.

However, the Penang Under-17 gained revenge over Kedah with a big 5-2 win in a Group A match while Perak beat Perlis 3-1.

In Group B, Johor beat Pahang 1-0, Negri won 1-0 against Sarawak and Bukit Jalil Sports School came off 2-1 winners over Selangor.

The MEFL is organised with the cooperation of 100PLUS, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

The league is participated by a total of 16 teams, one from each state, and will run from April through to August this year.
