The most
comprehensive
grassroots
motorsports
development
programme ever
initiated in the
country was
officially launched
by the Minister of
Youth and Sports,
Datuk Ismail Sabri
Yaakob, here today.
The development
programme, under the
auspices of the
Motorsports
Association of
Malaysia (MAM),
involves six
entry-level events
that will create the
ideal platform to
encourage the
participation of
youngsters in
various motorsports
activities.
The six development
events launched
today were
the Malaysian Mini
Bike Championship,
National ScooterPrix
MAM Championship,
MAM MX Talent
Search, MAM Grass
Racing Autocross
Challenge, MAM
Karting Talent
Search Programme as
well as MAM Rally
Sprint Series for
2008.
These entry-level
events are also
crucial as they will
help MAM identify
potential talents
early in their
careers. It is a
known fact that
talents need to be
nurtured at a young
age if they are to
be developed into
champions.
“One of MAM’s major
objectives when it
was formed was to
nurture young
talents into future
motor sports
champions. In order
to achieve this, MAM
has to intensively
promote motorsports
programmes at entry
or grassroot levels.
These six events we
have announced today
is the start,” said
Dato’ Azman Yahya,
Chairman of
Motosports
Commission of
Malaysia today.
Speaking at the
launch today, Dato’
Azman explained that
MAM provided
technical and
financial support to
affiliates to help
them develop new
entry level events.
“We
are working closely
with our affiliates
to identify, promote
and run motor sport
events and in the
process identify and
groom young talents
at an early age.”
“We also hope the
establishment of
these new events
will provide
opportunities for
youth throughout the
country to get
involved in
motorsport
activities in a
controlled, safe and
orderly manner,” he
said. “It is our
intention to create
a clear future path
in motorsports for
the youngsters.”
Dato’ Azman further
elaborated that MAM
hopes the
development
programme will
result in a larger
pool of motorsports
talent for the
country. “Through
these many
entry-level events,
we hope to develop a
continuous stream of
youngsters coming
through to carry the
nation’s flag into
the international
arena.”
He said affiliates
could also benefit
from the duty and
tax exempt scheme
managed by MAM for
vehicles used for
competition. “As you
are aware, the
Ministry of Finance
and Ministry of
International Trade
and Industry has
appointed MAM as the
governing body to
manage the scheme.
We have so far
assisted a number of
competitors and
organisers. Should
any of you be
interested to learn
and utilize this
scheme, please
contact MAM or have
a look at our
website mam.org.my.”
