Stunning Debut By Proton Axle

It usually takes a racing team months, if not years, to get their first win but Proton Axle showed that if determination and the will to succeed is overwhelming, anything is possible.

Formed less than two months ago, and managed by Malaysia's only Formula One driver Alex Yoong, the team scored a stunning success in the first two rounds of the ATCS 1500 Max at Sepang International Circuit by grabbing the top three positions in both rounds.

In the first race, Faidzil Alang finished first after a thrilling duel with Syafiq Ali. Syafiq, who was leading going into the last lap, spun in the wet conditions while trying to fend off Faidzil.

The error gave Faidzil the opening he needed to take the chequered flag. Syafiq finished second while Sanjeev Palar, a presenter with ESPN StarSports' Engine Block programme was third.

In the second race, Syafiq gained revenge when took control from the start to lead Faidzil home. Once again, Sanjeev was third.

It was indeed a great performance from amateur driver Sanjeev, who made his competition debut over the weekend.

Syafiq and Faidzil are now tied on 27 points each at the top of te Drivers' Championship. Sanjeev is third on 20 points.

Alex was visibly delighted with the results and said: "All the drivers did a good job this weekend and I was especially thrilled that our two Satrio Neo's stood up so well to the conditions.

"We will have a third Neo ready for Faidzil by the next race which should allow him to be more competitive. We have proven the reliability with these cars and will work to make them even quicker for the next round where the competition should be even stronger."

For the uninitiated, the 1500Max is a competition for normally aspirated cars below 1599cc, such as the Honda Jazz, Peugeot 206, Toyota Vios, Proton Gen 2 or Saga, Suzuki Swift, Chevrolet Aveo and the like.

Regulations ensure equality between the different makes while a strict power to weight ratio has been worked out, so that all cars will have an equal chance of winning.

This will ensure that nobody can gain an advantage and will keep the action close and exciting.
